Summer enrichment services are also offered through our SLLS Meridian Academy which targets strategy instruction to enhance Vocabulary, Reading, and Writing Success! Summer group programs provide an excellent opportunity for students to learn new strategies and build on skills during the summer months. SLLS Meridian Academy draws on the strength of the licensed speech-language pathologist who leads the small group experience guiding students through the learning process. While programs are offered through the summer Meridian Academy, services can be provided throughout the school year in individual or small group sessions.

Inference, Paraphrasing and Summarizing
Strategy Groups

Inference, Paraphrasing and Summarizing Strategy Groups – Groups are offered for middle school and high school age students to enhance language skills important for critical thinking and reading comprehension success. Instruction in the Inference and Paraphrasing & Summarizing Strategies from the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning will be the focus, specifically facilitated through the Strategic Intervention Model (SIM)™. The Inference Strategy is designed to help students improve reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. This analytical approach to making inferences is a strategy to facilitate connections between information read and prior knowledge to improve understanding of implied meaning in text and the ability to answer various types of inferential questions. The Fundamentals of Paraphrasing and Summarizing targets explicit instructions in identifying main ideas and related details to reinforce comprehension and facilitate improved oral and written expression. These research based strategies are taught by trained professionals assisting students in learning how to learn. Opportunities for continued weekly sessions, individually or in a group, can be arranged based on schedule availability.

Writing Groups

Writing Groups – The writing strategies that comprise this “process based approach to writing” assists school-aged students in producing well organized narrative and expository written products.  Writing strategies introduced include use of visual organizers from theLanguage Pathways™series and instruction in the “Step Up to Writing®” approach, which encompasses written language development at the sentence, paragraph, and essay levels. Explicit strategies may also include Sentence Writing, Paragraph Writing, and/or Theme Writing Strategies from the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning, specifically facilitated through the Strategic Intervention Model (SIM)™. In addition to instruction in the “Step Up to Writing®” approach, group participants will be introduced to additional therapeutic strategies such as the Reasons for Writing, Steps to the Writing Process, Steps to Editing, and the use of Visual Organizers as a part of the writing process. Explicit strategies can be used for improving oral expression, listening, note taking, and active reading skills. Individual and group programming available.

Vocabulary Groups

Vocabulary Groups“What’s the Word?”® is a vocabulary-building program offered to middle school and high school age students to enhance high level vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Curriculum activities target test taking skills, study skills, and grammar.  Additional extension activities focus on generalizing skills within written expression. While therapist directed and highly interactive, this multi-sensory program uses captioned video, illustrations, humor, and music to teach students new words and enhance their reading comprehension, replacing ineffective memorization methods. “What’s the Word?”®is supported by research that finds interactive and entertaining visual methods work best in vocabulary teaching and learning. The 635 vocabulary words included in this three volume program were chosen based on the frequency of appearance on the SAT and in literature. Workbook activities are also modeled after the types of questions used on the SAT and ACT exams. A great standardized test preparation for middle and high school aged students! Individual and group programming available.

Reading Services

Dyslexia Services – SLLS also offers therapeutic reading services for students and adults with reading concerns including those diagnosed with dyslexia or a learning disability in the area of reading decoding from our Certified Dyslexia Therapist, Lisa Cannon-Bearden, BSED, C.A.L.T., C.D.T. Lisa is certifed by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and the Academic Language Therapist Association (ALTA). Reading intervention provides direct, explicit, and systematic teaching through use of “Take Flight:  A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia” developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC).  Based on the original Orton-Gillingham model, techniques from The Multisensory Teaching Approach, and Lindamood-Bell LIPS program are also incorporated in this highly structured, sequential, multisensory, meaning-based program.  While intervention is individualized to meet student need, services offered at SLLS provide a structured and intensive phonetic approach to teaching reading that emphasizes phonological awareness, sound/symbol relationships, word attack skills, reading accuracy, reading fluency, and linguistic patterns.

Reading Groups –  Reading Groups are offered based on community interest and needs. Groups target completion of a literature selection(s) and focus on encouraging reading enjoyment while reinforcing important language based reading comprehension skills and oral reading fluency for elementary age students. Sessions focus on organization and maintenance of the established reading schedule as well as targeted comprehension skills enhanced through group discussion. Comprehension and verbal expression skills are supplemented by use of therapeutic strategies to enhance understanding of important literary elements such as characterization, setting, sequence of plot events, and theme analysis. The strategy of visual imagery involves creating a mental representation of information read and heard to improve comprehension skills and abilities, oral and written expression, and critical thinking skills and are introduced to enhance visual imagery skills. Active questioning strategies modeled during oral reading and book discussions reinforce the critical thinking skills of drawing conclusions, making predictions, and inferencing. Visual organizers are used for recording information about elements of literature and reinforces students’ verbal and written summaries. Services are offered by our licensed speech-language pathologists and can be individualized for students of all ages / grade levels based on schedule availablity.
